Comprehensive Dental Care Without the Stress
General anesthesia & patient comfort
For children with severe anxiety, complex dental needs, or special considerations, general anesthesia makes comprehensive treatment possible in a single, comfortable appointment. We prioritize your child's safety and peace of mind throughout the entire process.

What is general anesthesia for dental care?
General anesthesia is sedation that puts your child into a state of deep sleep or unconsciousness, allowing our dentists to provide extensive dental treatment safely and comfortably. At Happy Kids Dentistry, we understand that some children need more than gentle techniques and calm reassurance. We offer general anesthesia in a carefully supervised surgical setting with trained anesthesiologists and all appropriate monitoring equipment. Our pediatric dentists have extensive experience providing comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia. We handle all the planning, consents, pre-operative preparation, and post-operative care so you can focus on supporting your child.

The benefits of general anesthesia
General anesthesia makes comprehensive treatment possible when it otherwise wouldn't be. Your child gets all necessary dental work completed in one or two appointments instead of many visits over months or years. Your child experiences no pain, no anxiety, and no memory of the procedure. Plus, when a child's dental needs are addressed quickly and comprehensively, they transition to regular preventive care and build confidence rather than ongoing fear.
Complete treatment in fewer appointments
Under general anesthesia, our dentists can complete multiple procedures—cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions, or other treatments—in a single surgical appointment. This is much better for your child's mental health and your family's schedule than multiple visits over an extended period. Your child goes through one experience and then moves forward with prevention and maintenance.
No pain, anxiety, or memory
Your child is completely asleep during the procedure, so they feel no pain or discomfort and have no anxiety during treatment. Most children don't remember the experience afterward, which eliminates the possibility of dental trauma. They wake up, their dental problems are solved, and they move forward without fear.
Safe, medically supervised care
General anesthesia for dental care is very safe when provided in an appropriate setting with trained professionals. Our surgical facility has all necessary monitoring equipment, trained anesthesiologists oversee your child's sedation, and our pediatric dentists have extensive experience. We follow strict safety protocols to ensure your child is protected throughout the procedure.

Our general anesthesia & sedation options

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that helps children relax during dental treatment. Your child inhales a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nose mask. It takes effect quickly and wears off quickly once the mask is removed. Your child remains awake and aware but feels relaxed and less anxious. Nitrous oxide doesn't put your child to sleep, but it reduces anxiety and makes the experience more comfortable. It's a great option for mildly anxious children or for procedures that don't require deep sedation. Your child can go home shortly after the appointment once the gas has worn off.

IV sedation
IV sedation delivers medications directly into your child's bloodstream to produce a deeper level of relaxation or light sleep. Your child is still somewhat responsive but drowsy and relaxed, with significantly reduced awareness of what's happening. IV sedation is useful for moderately anxious children or for procedures that take longer than nitrous oxide alone would be appropriate for. A trained anesthesiologist monitors your child's vital signs throughout. Your child will need some recovery time after the appointment and shouldn't eat or drink beforehand.

General anesthesia in a surgical setting
General anesthesia puts your child into a state of unconsciousness so they're completely unaware of the procedure. This is provided in a hospital or outpatient surgical center with full anesthesia team support. Our pediatric dentists work with trained anesthesiologists to monitor your child's vital signs, breathing, and overall safety throughout the procedure. General anesthesia is appropriate for children with severe anxiety, complex dental needs, or medical conditions that make other sedation options unsuitable. It allows comprehensive treatment to be completed in one or two appointments. Your child will need pre-operative evaluation, fasting, and post-operative recovery time.

Advanced numbing technology
Even without sedation, we minimize pain using advanced numbing technology. Our equipment delivers numbing medication so gently that most children don't feel the injection. Our topical anesthetics numb the area before injection, and our techniques are refined to be as painless as possible. Combined with our calm approach and expert technique, many children are surprised when treatment is already done—they didn't feel anything.

Pain-free post-operative care
After general anesthesia or any substantial treatment, we provide detailed post-operative instructions so you know exactly how to care for your child's mouth as it heals. We explain what to expect, how to manage any discomfort, and when to call us with concerns. We're always available if you have questions, and we schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor healing and transition your child to regular preventive care.
The general anesthesia and sedation process
Consultation and planning
If your child might benefit from sedation or general anesthesia, we'll start with a consultation where we listen to your concerns and examine your child. We assess your child's dental needs, anxiety level, medical history, and overall health. We discuss which sedation option might be best, nitrous oxide for mild anxiety, IV sedation for moderate needs, or general anesthesia for severe anxiety or complex treatment. We explain the process, answer all your questions, and make sure you feel confident with the plan. If general anesthesia is recommended, we arrange a pre-operative evaluation with the anesthesiologist and provide you with detailed pre-operative instructions about fasting, medications, and what to expect.
Sedation or anesthesia appointment
On the day of treatment, we check in with you one more time, confirm all information is current, and answer any last-minute questions. For nitrous oxide or IV sedation, your child will remain in our office. For general anesthesia, we'll be at the hospital or surgical center. Once sedation is established and your child is comfortable, our pediatric dentists provide all necessary dental treatment—cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions, or other procedures. The anesthesiologist or sedation team monitors your child's vital signs throughout, and we maintain the highest safety standards. Your child feels nothing, experiences no pain, and has no memory of the procedure.
Recovery and post-operative care
After treatment is complete, your child wakes up comfortably (if under general anesthesia, recovery takes some time). We give you detailed post-operative instructions about eating, drinking, activity, oral hygiene, and what to expect as your child heals. For general anesthesia, you'll stay with your child during recovery. Most children go home and rest for the remainder of the day. We schedule a follow-up appointment within one to two weeks to check healing and transition your child to regular preventive care. We're always available if you have concerns during the healing process.
