Building Healthy Smiles From the Start

Cleanings & preventive care

Regular cleanings and preventive care are the foundation of a healthy smile. We help your child build habits that last a lifetime, so they can stay out of the dental chair and focused on thriving.

What is preventive dental care?

Preventive dental care is about stopping problems before they start. It includes regular cleanings, exams, digital X-rays, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and education about good oral hygiene habits. When kids develop these healthy routines early, they're less likely to need fillings, crowns, or other treatments down the road. At Happy Kids Dentistry, we believe the best dental care is the kind that prevents decay in the first place.

The benefits of preventive care

Preventive care saves time, money, and stress. When you catch problems early or prevent them entirely, your child avoids pain and complex treatments. Plus, kids who have good oral health habits from an early age carry those benefits into adulthood. We're not just protecting your child's teeth, we're setting them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Catch problems before they become serious

Our digital X-rays and thorough exams let us spot decay and other issues in their earliest stages. When we catch something small, we can address it quickly and simply, before it becomes a bigger problem that requires more extensive treatment.

Protection against decay with fluoride and sealants

We use professional-grade fluoride treatments to strengthen your child's enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay. Dental sealants are a protective coating we apply to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, the places where decay most often hides. Together, these treatments give your child an extra layer of protection against cavities.

Education that sticks with them for life

We don't just clean your child's teeth and send them home. We teach them why brushing, flossing, and healthy eating matter. We talk to you about what you can do at home to support their oral health. When kids understand the "why" behind good habits, they're much more likely to stick with those habits.

Our preventive care treatments

Professional cleanings and exams

Our hygienists and dentists perform thorough cleanings that remove plaque and tartar your child can't remove at home. During the exam, we check for cavities, gum disease, and any other concerns. We take digital X-rays to see what's happening between the teeth and under the gums. For new patients, this initial visit takes about 50 minutes and includes cleaning, fluoride, exam, and X-rays all in one appointment. After that, we recommend cleanings every six months to keep your child's mouth in top shape.

Digital X-rays

Digital X-rays show us details that a visual exam alone can't reveal. They help us spot decay between teeth, check the health of tooth roots, and monitor the development of permanent teeth. Digital technology means less radiation exposure compared to traditional X-rays, so your child gets the information we need with minimal radiation dose.

Fluoride treatments

Professional fluoride treatments are stronger than what's in toothpaste and help harden your child's enamel to resist decay. We apply fluoride as a gel, foam, or varnish—whichever works best for your child. This is especially helpful if your child is cavity-prone or if their diet includes lots of sugary foods and drinks. We'll talk with you about whether regular fluoride treatments are right for your child's risk level.

Dental sealants

Sealants are a thin, protective coating we paint onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where cavities most often start. The sealant fills in the grooves and pits where food and bacteria hide, making those surfaces much easier to keep clean. If your child has deep grooves on their molars or a history of cavities, sealants are a smart, simple way to prevent decay.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Silver Diamine Fluoride is a liquid treatment we apply to areas of early decay to stop it from progressing. It's especially useful for very young children or children with special needs, since it requires no drilling or invasive treatment. SDF hardens the tooth structure and prevents the decay from spreading, buying time until your child is ready for a more traditional restoration if needed. We'll explain how SDF works and whether it's a good option for your child.

Oral hygiene education

During every visit, we teach your child how to brush and floss properly. We show them the right technique, the right amount of time, and the right tools. We talk about how diet affects their teeth—why water is better than juice, why limiting candy matters, and how snacking patterns impact decay risk. Most importantly, we help your child understand that taking care of their teeth is about taking care of themselves. When kids feel empowered to protect their own health, they're much more likely to do it.

The preventive care process

Your child arrives and gets comfortable

When you arrive for your appointment, we'll have your paperwork ready so there's minimal wait time. Your child will head back with our hygienist or dentist, and we'll start by making sure they feel comfortable. Our team uses a warm, friendly approach, and we explain what we're going to do every step of the way so there are no surprises.

We examine, take X-rays, and clean

Our hygienist or dentist will do a visual exam of your child's teeth and gums, take digital X-rays to see what's happening between the teeth and under the surface, and then do a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. This is where we spot any concerns early. If we find decay, we'll talk with you about options. If everything looks great, we'll focus on protecting those healthy teeth.

We educate and protect

Once we've cleaned your child's teeth, we apply fluoride and discuss whether sealants or other protective treatments are right for them. We talk with your child about what they can do at home to keep their teeth healthy, and we talk with you about supporting those habits. Before you leave, we'll schedule your next appointment, usually in six months, and send you home confident that your child's smile is in great shape.

Frequently asked questions

We know you have questions about keeping your child's teeth healthy, and we're here to help you feel confident about your preventive care plan.

How often should my child get their teeth cleaned?
Most children benefit from cleanings and exams every six months. This schedule helps us catch any problems early and gives us a chance to reinforce good habits at regular intervals. If your child is cavity-prone or has other risk factors, we may recommend more frequent visits. We'll let you know what's right for your child based on their individual needs.
Does my child need fluoride treatments?
Professional fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent decay, especially if your child eats a lot of sugary foods, has a history of cavities, or is just developing permanent teeth. Not every child needs fluoride treatments, but many benefit from them. During your first visit, we'll assess your child's cavity risk and let you know whether professional fluoride is a good idea. We'll always discuss it with you first.
When should my child start seeing the dentist?
We recommend bringing your child in for their first visit around age one, or once their first tooth appears. Early visits help us monitor development, catch any issues early, and get your child comfortable with the dentist. We offer infant dentistry and can make the experience fun and stress-free, even for the littlest patients. Starting early also helps prevent the "vicious cycle" of decay that can happen if problems aren't caught quickly.
